In Dhaka, where chronic traffic congestion has long tested the patience of commuters, the slow process of manual toll collection has often added to the frustration.

To address this issue, an automated Radio-Frequency IDentification (RFID)-based solution has been introduced for the Jatrabari–Gulistan flyover, offering seamless, cashless and queue-free passage.

The service, provided by bKash in partnership with Orion Infrastructure Limited, covers the entire process from registration to payment. Vehicles are fitted with RFID stickers on their windshields, which are automatically scanned at toll booths. The toll is then deducted directly from the commuter’s bKash or bank account, eliminating the need for cash transactions.

According to experts, manual toll booths process only 300–400 vehicles per hour, while RFID systems can handle up to four times as many, significantly reducing congestion and maximising road capacity. Commuters—including office workers, students, and emergency services—can cross the flyover without stopping, saving valuable time and improving the overall transport experience.

Md Naif Uddin Khan, head of Operations at Orion Infrastructure Limited, urged the public to adopt digital toll payments. “RFID use is cutting down queues and increasing speed,” he said. “Toll payments from a bKash or bank account are benefiting users and making our toll management easier.”

Drivers and regular commuters have welcomed the change. Niyamat, who drives on the Dhaka–Narayanganj route, described the system as a “VIP service”. He said: “I used to wait in line to pay with cash. Now I pay with bKash and cross directly without stopping. It feels like a VIP system.” Another driver, Md. Manik, noted: “The biggest benefit is not having to carry cash or worry about change. Crossing is faster and hassle-free.”

Private vehicle owner Ahmed Hasan compared the new system to international standards and called for similar services nationwide. Meanwhile, motorcycles are supported through a dedicated QR-based RFID sticker, available via registration in the bKash app.

Rider Rupom Nandi, who registered at the Kutubkhali Toll Plaza booth, said: “It was so convenient to complete registration here. Now I won’t have to waste time or worry about change. I can just pay directly with bKash.”

RFID registration is available at booths along the flyover and through the bKash app. Users can also purchase trips digitally, ensuring faster and more efficient journeys for all commuters.
